Homeowners looking to save money are turning to geothermal technology to heat and cool their homes. Geothermal is the most energy efficient, environmentally clean and cost effective system for temperature control available. A geothermal or ground source heat pump is powered by electricity. It uses the natural and constant temperature of the earth to heat and cool your home. Sealed pipes are buried near your home utilizing one of three methods depending on the site conditions: vertical loop, pond loop or horizontal loop installation. In the winter, heat from the earth is delivered to the heart of your geothermal system where it is compressed to a higher temperature and sent as warm air throughout your home. In the summer, the system reverses itself. The liquid in the pipe circulates in the loop, drawing the warm air from inside your home back into the cooler earth below.
Homeowners with geothermal systems may be able to claim up to 30% of the installed cost in tax credits in the year the system is placed into service (Fed. Energy Tax Incentive – subject to program rules and availability).
Homeowners may also apply for local utility rebates (MN Valley Electric – subject to funds availability).
Geothermal heat pumps use up to 50% less electricity than conventional heating and cooling HVAC systems.
Geothermal heat pumps can save homeowners 30-70% on heating and 20-50% on cooling costs over conventional HVAC systems.
Ordinary systems often require costly regular maintenance for each unit – the furnace, air conditioner and water heater. A geothermal system requires little or no maintenance beyond periodic checks and filter changes and they typically last more than 20 years if properly maintained.
Quiet Operation: Geothermal systems are quiet with no unsightly A/C unit to disturb you or your neighbors.
Comfort: Geothermal systems heat and cool homes evenly, eliminating the hot and cold blasts of air found with conventional HVAC systems and they dehumidify the air during the hot summer months.
Space Saving: Geothermal heat pump systems require less space than conventional HVAC systems.
Clean & Safe: Geothermal systems use ground-source heat that is safe, naturally renewable and non-polluting since they do not burn fossil fuels – no flame, no flue, no odor and no carbon monoxide.
It’s a great time to buy a new home as interest rates are at a record low and homeownership is more affordable than ever!
